I saw something similar in Viet Nam last year. A light which showed time remaining for each phase, and has secondary light set for cycle/moped riders close to the post. See:

A lot simpler is to just use the European convention of flashing the yellow light at the end of the red cycle, so that both yellow and red are on for a few seconds, indicating that the light is about to change to green. Doesn't require new lights, just new programming.

Nice actually I think it is best way to
